Tikehau is a remote but beautifully situated atoll with some of the best diving in French Polynesia.

Tikehau or Robinson's Island is a small oval shaped atoll just west of the more famous atoll Rangiroa. It roughly has a diameter of ten kilometers with the main villages Tuherahera (Tuerahera) and Maiaia. There are a few guesthouses, resorts and the indigenous population of only 500 people is very friendly. Other highlights on this atoll include lagoon fishing, visits to bird colonies, remote picnicking, snorkeling and visiting its secluded white and pink-sand beaches. The local residents have been living off fishing for millennia and still share methods to provide fish for local markets and as their own main source of food and income.

The best diving is found on its western side in between the islands Motutohuno and Puafa. The famous Tuheiava Pass in between Matiti and Teonai offers excellent drift diving amongst sharks and large pelagic species. Cousteau said it is one of the most diverse atolls in French Polynesia.
